IEC 61850 Simulation & Testing

Test your substation.
Without touching it.

SubstationSynk simulates complete IEC 61850 environments in software — GOOSE interlocking, MMS communication, sampled values, and factory acceptance testing. No lab hardware required.

The Problem

You can't test a substation
the way it deserves to be tested.

Physical lab setups are expensive, slow, and never available when you need them.

Physical Lab Bottleneck
FAT labs with real IED hardware are shared, expensive to maintain, and create scheduling bottlenecks that delay commissioning by weeks. Engineers queue for access while projects stall.
Vendor-Specific Testing
Each OEM — GE, Siemens, ABB, SEL — simulates their own devices differently. There's no neutral, interoperable simulation environment that covers the full substation topology.
Live Risk at Commissioning
Without rigorous simulation, the first real test of IEC 61850 GOOSE interlocking and MMS report blocks happens on energised equipment. One misconfigured dataset can cause a protection misoperation.
Two Modes

Server Mode. Client Mode.
Complete coverage.

SubstationSynk operates in both server and client roles — simulating IEDs and testing against them from the same platform.

Server Mode Simulate IEDs
SubstationSynk instantiates IEC 61850 server instances that behave like real IEDs — publishing GOOSE, reporting via MMS, and responding to client read/write operations. Test your SCADA or HMI against a full virtual switchyard.
Import ICD/CID files and simulate existing substation configs
Publish GOOSE frames across Ethernet segments
Buffered and unbuffered report control blocks
Up to 30,000 data nodes per server instance
Sampled Values (SV) output support
Client Mode Test Real IEDs
Connect SubstationSynk as an IEC 61850 client to real IEDs or other simulations. Validate report subscriptions, send control commands, subscribe to GOOSE, and run test sequences against hardware in the factory or field.
Connect to real IEDs — MiCOM, Multilin, REF, C264 BCU
Subscribe to GOOSE and validate interlocking logic
Send and monitor MMS control commands
Network sniffer — capture and decode MMS and GOOSE live
Export validated SCL: ICD, IID, CID

Use Cases

Four problems it solves today.

01
🏭
Factory Acceptance Testing
Run FAT against SubstationSynk without requiring physical IED hardware to be pre-commissioned in the lab. GE Vernova uses SubstationSynk in their internal FAT workflows.
02
New Substation Commissioning
Validate GOOSE interlocking, MMS datasets, and report subscription trees before energisation. Find misconfigured data objects in simulation rather than on live switchgear.
03
🔬
SCADA / HMI Development & Test
Frontend developers and integrators can test SCADA screens and HMI bindings against a full virtual IEC 61850 server farm without access to a hardware lab or live site.
04
📚
Training & Knowledge Transfer
Train protection engineers on IEC 61850 concepts — GOOSE semantics, MMS object hierarchies, dataset configuration — using live simulation rather than static slide decks.
"SubstationSynk is our go-to environment for internal Factory Acceptance Testing of IEC 61850 interfaces — validated against MiCOM, Multilin, and C264 BCU devices."
— Used in production by GE Vernova India and GE Vernova Qatar engineering teams

Why SubstationSynk

Purpose-built for
IEC 61850 environments.

01
Edition 1, 2, and 2.1 support
Covers the full IEC 61850 edition spectrum — from legacy Ed 1 deployments to modern Ed 2.1 environments. Works with the equipment already in the field.
02
Validated against real OEM hardware
Tested against GE MiCOM P series, Multilin 350/750, and Alstom C264 BCU in actual FAT environments. Interoperability is proven, not assumed.
03
Massive scale — 30,000 nodes per instance
Simulate a complete transmission substation — multiple voltage levels, dozens of feeders, complex interlocking — in a single software instance. No artificial node limits.
04
Ships with SignalForge
SubstationSynk is included as a module within every SignalForge deployment. No separate licence, no separate integration project. Simulate, validate, convert — from a single platform.
05
India-resident, India-supported
No overseas dependency. The engineering team that built SubstationSynk supports it from India. Timezones, language, and grid context all match.
